Symbiosis

Coming towards the end of the songs that I (Damien) wrote or co-wrote, we arrive at the second-last track (# 13) on the ‘Running Behind Time’ album, which is called ‘Symbiosis’. Also keeping in mind that three of the songs on the album were written by lead singer David Zalinian, and for which he will get around to writing blogs about at some point.

All of my previous blogs describe the story behind the lyrics of the songs. In the case of Symbiosis though, there is no particular story. For many well-known pop or rock songs, this is also true, and there are also many of them where the lyrics are thrown together without much meaning, or others where lyrics form a chant. And many of these songs rule the music bars, dancefloors, and our playlists.

Symbiosis simply reflects how we often race against time in our lives, and gives a message of optimism that against this backdrop of reality, we should always try to focus on our human needs, and improve our personal lives. Thereby doing our part to make the world around us a better place.

Musically, the song also hits an uplifting feeling, with a dynamic and up-tempo pop/rock vibe. It’s straightforward in structure, with a driving 4/4-time rhythm pattern.

After the original recording, when I had the album re-produced in a different studio, this was one of the songs that was augmented with new guitar tracks and effects, which lifted the song to a new level, and transformed it to a finished product. Which is not to detract from the original recording, where the character of the song was structured. Just the combination of original recording, with later additional input, combining to good effect. Another example of small but important details, making a big difference.

Thereby, a song with relatively simple musical and lyrical structure, was able to achieve its potential as a completed unit.
