Expectation

Expectation is the opening song on the ‘Running Behind Time’ album, and it’s one of the first songs I wrote.

It started as a 2x 16-bar guitar figure that was circling in my head at the time, which plays at the end of each verse and bridge, like a chorus without vocals. The musical progression of the verse and bridge sections basically just follows the lyrical melody, and there’s a break with just vocals and atmospheric effects in the first half (again 2x 16-bar length) of verse 3.

The time signature of the groove is a standard 4/4 time all the way through.

The lyrics follow the story of a couple meeting for a first date, narrated from the guy’s perspective. In the first verse, he wants to get there on time, and is a bit nervous and edgy about how the evening will pan out.

In the second verse, they’re together having dinner and drinks, going through the routine of getting to know each other, and subtly trying to impress each other.

Thereafter it’s up to the listener to imagine if they went home together, or just separately parted ways. In any case, they both know that the evening was a one-off, and they can keep the memories of how they charmed each other with friendly chat, and of how the evening ended up.
