Gearing up
This blog section is for all drummers and drum gear enthusiasts out there. Below I describe my current drums set-up, which is the basic kit with kick, toms, and snare, along with cymbals and sticks that I use.
Next I describe what I used for the studio recordings of the 2021 single 'Isolation', and the earlier 'Running Behind Time' album.
Hope you like it. If it's popular, maybe we can build a chat forum around it. Enjoy !
my Current Drumkit Set-Up
Shell set:
I currently use a (mainly) Sonor 3007 maple shell drum kit. Set-up is as follows:
- Sonor 3007 maple shell: BD: 22x17.5, rack toms 10x8, 12x9, floor tom 14x14
- Sonor Sonic Plus birch shell: floor tom 16x16 (don’t use it much, but it sounds great! 😊)
- Tama Imperial Star poplar shell: rack tom 8x7
Snare drums:
- I mainly use a Craviotto solid shell maple 14x5.5
- I also have a Gretsch 14x8 maple (I think !!, or maybe a hybrid of maple with another hardwood). It was made in early 1970’s and I bought it around 1992😊
Cymbals:
- Crash: Sabian 17’’ HHX Studio, Sabian 16’’ HHX Studio, and Sabian 15’’ thin (one from the old days 😊)
- Hi-Hats: Sabian HHX 14’’ Stage hats
- Ride: Istanbul Agop + Mehmet (signed by both) 22’’ heavy
Sticks:
- For live gigs, I use Vic Firth 55A
- For practice, I use Goodwood (by Vater) 5A
- I also keep hot-rods and brushes on standby if needed 😊
used in Studio Recordings
‘Running Behind Time’ album
All songs on the album were recorded using a previous Sonor S Class Maple kit I had at the time. Same sizes as the 3007’s above, except the rack toms deeper by one inch.
The 8x7 tom that I used with that kit was a Yamaha Stage Custom Advantage (Nouveau).
The cymbals used were exactly the same as I use currently (as described above), with the exception of the Hi-Hats, which were Sabian Paragon 14’’.
The snare drum used was the Craviotto 14x5.5 maple as above.
‘Isolation’ single
I used the recording studio shell kit set-up which was a Yamaha Recording Custom. I used my own (at that time) Yamaha Stage Custom Advantage (Nouveau) 8x7 tom along with the studio kit, and my own cymbals and Craviotto snare that I currently use, as described above.
